For a walk on the wild side, head to the Franklin Park Zoo. It opened in 1912, and features hundreds of animals from around the world. Here is some of what the zoo has to offer near our Longwood apartments in Boston:

Giraffe Savannah

Visit the zoo's tallest creatures in Giraffe Savannah. Masai giraffes are easily recognized by their jagged and irregular spots. These animals grow up to 18 feet tall, and their six-foot-long necks help them eat twigs, flowers, and leaves off trees that other animals can't typically reach. In 2019, the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species listed the Masai giraffe as endangered.

Raptor Ridge

Constructed more than a century ago, Raptor Ridge is one of only two of the zoo's original buildings. It was recently renovated and is home to majestic Andean condors and Steller's eagles. Be sure to look up, as the condors might be perched on a rocky ledge above you.

Behind-the-Scenes

Finally, for added fun, go behind the scenes to learn about the zoo's red pandas. In the wild, these charming creatures call the " isolated mountainous areas in the high forests of Asia" home. Red pandas mainly eat bamboo. They consume more than four pounds of it daily and will eat things such as fruit, acorns, and bird eggs if bamboo is unavailable. Less than 10,000 red pandas are believed to remain in the wild. Close-toed shoes are required for the tour.
